My boyfriend had a 5.8 cm long 2.5 cm wide and 2 cm deep incision after his surgery to remove his pilonidal cyst and he ended up with a wound vac. The vac we have is the "hospital version", the one you get during your stay at the hospital. He's supposed to have a smaller, "going home" one.

The other day the pressure was going from 0 mmHG to 200 and wouldn't stay at 150 like we were told to set it at. He's had it for about 3 weeks now and we hadn't had the problem before and we haven't since, but I would like to know if anyone has any advice on what to do if it happens again. We ended up just turning the vac off for the night after a couple of hours of it sounding the alarm, because he was going to wound care in the morning anyways.

We don't have a day nurse that comes to change his dressings, I simply watched the wound care specialists and they explained everything they did for me. It was also late when the pressure started fluctuating, so no one would answer our calls.

The incision is MUCH smaller now, we expect him to keep the wound vac only till next Friday, and then switch to packing the wound instead. Our overall experience with the wound vac has been great, the only problems is when wound care specialists who didn't know what they were doing wouldn't seal it correctly and I had to redo it when we got home using our free but limited supply of foam and other supplies. Otherwise, my boyfriend is healing rapidly and painlessly with nothing to complain about.

Thanks in advance for any advice, whether about the vac or criticism that I'm not doing something right.
Rain

Okay. So i guess i should start from the beginning huh. I was diagnosed exactly last year from this month with this awful painful burden. It all started when I noticed the pain coming from my rear end and I had it checkedout about 2 weeks after. The pain at first was immense but at other times it was actually pretty bearable. So I was put on medication and was advised strongly to go through with a surgery....only problem was my profession doesn't really allow for that kind of time off especially since I'm just beginning and need the money. I am a professional dancer and work with a studio and I also teach dance and have been working professionally for about two years. So what I did instead was put off surgery and tried to live with it. It hasn't been too bad. There'd probably be a month or two where I wouldn't get flare ups and I could actually sit on my tailbone with no pain and the pain never got TOO unbearable YET it is still a nuisance and I'm sure it can't be healthy to live with it. SO, my question to you all that know my pain is whether I should go through with surgery soon or not? And if I do, will I still be able to dance to my full potential? How long before I could sit on my tailbone? Should I shave down there often? (as I do have a moderately hairy rear). Sorry for the long post but I'm just really curious and I don't want this to hinder my new career in any way.

Hi there~

I'm new to the forum, as I had my cyst drained last Monday, on August 23. I'm a pretty fit person, exercised five or six times per week prior to surgery, and everything seems to be healing well. One issue I'm facing is that I'm experiencing some considerable fatigue. I figured by the ninth or tenth day I'd start to feel stronger but instead I'm feeling incredibly weak--it comes and goes--and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced that?

Even walking very short distances really exhausts me, this is very unlike me, so I wanted to see if anyone else could relate?

Thank you,

John

I posted a couple days ago "1st Occurance and I'm a little confused?!?!"

First off, thank you so much everyone for your quick replies on the last post.

Unfortunately, my case seems to be getting worse [=(]. Since the drainage I had with the original problem, I have been feeling good. Little or no additional drainage has occured and I have only been slightly uncomfortable every once in awhile. The new problem is this:

I have seen the original sinus hole (if that's what it is called) that the original drainage came from. Now there are 3 more holes! One is located right above the original. The other two are 2 or 3 inches above the others, more on my back then my tailbone/buttcrack area. I'm not sure what this means at all, and I'm getting really worried.

If I leave it alone, can it just go away on it's own? I know it would be wise to see a doctor but I don't have insurance or money. And I'm not above asking my parents, but my father was recently laid off, and that is how I lost insurance. So, there is not much money to go around on this.

I don't know what to do, please help

A little background I suppose would be helpful, lol.

My name is Matthew, I am new to this site/forum, and so happy I have found it :). Anyways, I'm 20 years of age and attend college full-time. I played a lot of sports in the past, mostly soccer, and have sustained many injuries over the years (i.e. spinal cuncussions). Also, being a college student, I end up sitting down for long periods of time whether for class or studying.

So, about last Monday, I started to experience slight discomfort in/around my tailbone area along with a small, pea sized bump. I had experienced this "bump" a few years earlier in my life, so I thought nothing of it. Over the course of two days, the pain had become increasingly worse, to the point that standing, sitting, walking, and even sleeping seemed like an impossible task. I finally broke down, and went to my doctor to find out what was wrong. After a lot of pain and poking, he determined that I had an infection on/of the tailbone. Seemed reasonable because all the pain felt like it was coming from there. He prescribed me medication, Cepro to be exact, and sent me on my way.

After two more days, the pain got to a whole new level. The meds didn't seem to be working, and on top of that, I had an even bigger bump filled with fluid at the top of my buttcrack. I had been experiencing fevers ever since this showed up, and on Thursday, I had passed out and woke up with my clothes drenched in sweat. On the next day ,Friday (luckily I don't have class on this day) I was sitting at my desk studying when I started to feel intense itching along with a strange smell. I hurried to the bathroom and pulled down my pants. To my surprise, the bump had started to drain disgusting yellowish, red pus. After spending almost two hours in the bathroom, it finally slowed, but then started to drain a lot of blood. When it was finally clear enough to see, I noticed a small, pen dot hole in which the fluid was coming out of. I started getting scared at this point.

After I cleaned up all the way, I immediately went to my laptop and started to try to diagnose myself. All the signs and symptoms were pointing to a Pilonidal Cyst/Sinus.

This is the point at which I am. The cyst isn't really bothering me after the drainage, however it is still a bit tender, and a little fluid still drains from it every once in awhile. I'm not sure what I should do?!?

Can I just leave it alone and let it go away? Or do I need to go see the doctor to take further action?

I'm limited with options because, at the moment, I do not have any health insurance, and I'm a college student, so I don't have that much money:).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! And sorry my post is so long [8)].

Whenever you find out something is wrong with you, it always seems like you are utterly alone in the world with the problem staring you down into a corner. It is always such a relieve to find forums like this with such helpful people. Thank you so much once again!

With Regard,
Matthew

I had my closed cyst removal surgery on the 21st of July. I thought a few days later that I was getting relief, but then the pain returned, and has been getting progressively worse. It's like the cyst is back and it hasn't even been a month and a half. My surgeon said to wait a full 2 months before gaging whether or not it is back, but if the pain is like before now, did he really get it all? I can't imagine that the 'healing' would feel exactly like the cyst is still there. This is annoying. I want to call my surgeon now and tell him that the pain is just like before, but he said wait 2 full months. Is this how it should feel at this time? I just don't understand if you get a cyst removed, how it could be just as painful as before without having time to develop a whole new cyst? PLEASE HELP!!!

I need some advice.
I have been living with this problem since i was 17 and im 21 now. the first time it came up i just figured it was some type of acne since it only started to hurt mildly when it was about to "pop". It started off about the size of a nickle and is now pea size. It comes up every once in a while with gaps ranging from a few months to a few days. Since i wasnt getting sick or devoloping any on other parts of my body i figured it wasnt serious and would go away on its own. Obviously it didnt and has become more of an annoyance then anything else. My search lead me here and now im a little concerned([:xx]). I havent gone to see a doctor about it in all this time but since its getting smaller does that mean it will go away?

What is the chance of getting an embolism after pilonidal cyst surgery?

I'm trying to figure out how much risk there is involved with this surgery to determine if I should get mine removed. If I have the surgery it will have to be a closed wound healing method. I wonder how using this healing method effects the chance of embolism?

My cyst doesnt become infected but I want it gone! It can start to hurt if I mountain bike.

hey, I'm new here. I wanted to ask everyone who had surgery before a few questions. As far as history, I had an excision done with stitches to close it but they were then removed two weeks later. Also I moved after my surgery so I am seeing a different surgeon (this guy is a rec/col specialist unlike my old general surgeon who performed the surgery).

1. He said that I cannot get an infection with the excision opened up so I should be fine. Do you guys agree that this is true? I ask because there is bleeding and such, so I thought any open skin can still get an infection from the exposure.

2. I had a lot of dark brown liquid(/tissue?) and blood pore out the day after I saw my new surgeon. The surgeon said he just cut hair out of the open area when I had the checkup. I got very worried when I saw all this dark brown stuff coming out of the excision though. It did not smell like anything at all. Do you think it's just old blood or something? Should I be worried?

3. I'm going to have to shave that area by myself to prevent recurrences, but I was wondering if hair removal cream would be safe to use around the excision? If not, maybe after the excision heals completely?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Hello! I was on this site a little over a year ago. I had just found I had a pilonidal cyst, and i was faced with the decision to have surgery or not. I chose not to have the surgery, against mostly everyone's advice.

Things went back to normal. Every couple months or so, i would have very little pain and then it would go away. Then, this year August 7th (saturday), the day of my graduation party, it hurt again. I was hoping it would just go away after a day or so. Instead, it got worse. By Monday i was in so much pain i was sent home from work. The next day i went to my regular doctor, and saw a nurse practitioner. She looked at it and made me appointment to go see the surgeon again the next day. I went, feeling i was just wasting my time, because i was not going to have the surgery, i figured "I'm 18 now, i can do what i want!".

I got there and he looked at it and decided he was going to lance it! WHAT?! I was completely unprepared. I freaked out and begged and begged to not have to do it. I was terrified. After about half an hour of freaking out, i finally gave in and knelt up on the bed thing. I couldn't wait for him to be done. Then my parents scheduled me for the surgery the following monday. I was going to have the open surgery.

From the wednesday i had the lancing done to the monday i had the surgery, i was sick as a dog with fear. The day after the lancing i went back to have the bandage changed, and i have to say it was the most horrendous pain i had ever felt. It was chaotic. My mom passed out in the waiting room, after she had left the room, and the pain made me feel extremely light headed and nauseous. We relaxed for a little while then went home. I had to go back the next day for the doctor to changed my bandage again because i was still bleeding quite a bit. The pain was remarkably less, but still pretty painful. The rest of the week i just layed around, very anxious for the surgery. My boyfriend would come over almost every day and could get my mind off it, but i still couldn't help but think about it.

When Monday morning rolled around i was extremely nauseous. I was so terrified. All i could think about was all of those shows on tv about the people who wake up while having surgery, and as hard as i tried i couldn't get my mind off that thought. I was put a little at ease when i talked to an anesthesiologist who told me he had heard about stories like that, but it was very very very unlikely it would happen to me.

I have a stuffed bear my boyfriend gave me that i keep with me when i'm going through something rough. I took him to the hospital, expecting to have my parents hold on to him while i was in surgery. When the nurse started to roll me into the OR, she told me i could take my bear in with me. Which really helped me feel a lot better.

I can remember laying in the OR, and heard the surgeon and nurses talking. they let me hold my bear the whole time. Then the next thing i knew i opened my eyes and a nurse was handing me a cup of apple juice. It was the greatest think i had ever tasted haha. I was very loopy and kept asking what time it was, and talking to my bear exclaiming "We did it Mickie Bear!! We had surgery! We did it!!" i must've looked like a fool. I couldn't believe i had just had surgery! I had been so nervous before, and to have it over, i was shocked!

I went home about an hour and a half later. I was in practically no pain. I assumed it was like i read on this site, that if the surgeon put a numbing thing in me, i would feel the pain in a couple days. I went back the next day for the first bandage change and there was just a little sharp pain. I asked the surgeon if the pain would get worse and he said any numbing agent he put in, had worn off by then. I was very glad to hear that! i felt pretty good! A couple days after the surgery, i did a little more than i shouldve, and was sore for a couple days. I went back 8 days after the surgery and was in no pain. He said i was healing great and i could do pretty much anything i wanted as long as i felt good. I felt great! I started driving again, and i went to the zoo yesterday! I'm feeling really really good. My dad does my bandage changes, and i don't even feel him take the gauze out anymore.

To be honest, most of the reason i didn't want to have the surgery, was because i was afraid of having an open wound, and the thought of having gauze put in and out of there sounded like it would be horribly painful! But its been nothing! I feel great, and i am actually very happy that i had the surgery, and hopefully i won't have to deal with this again.

I definately recommend having the surgery to anyone reading this, who might be afraid. Trust me, i was terrified. I remember posting here last year and everyone told me i should have it done and i refused. But really, if i could get through this, anyone can!

I'm sorry this was so long, and if you read through all of it thanks a lot for being interested in my story :) I plan on sticking around here for a while as i heal. It's been 13 days since my surgery and i feel about 98% back to normal. I know i still have a long way to go to be completely healed, but i'm so glad i'm feeling good and can go back to my normal life, for the most part!

First off, I'm glad I found this board. It's not a fun issue to deal with, but it is good to hear from others with similar experiences.

I had an open surgery 10 days ago. The wound is open with no packing. It went better than I thought for the most part, but I do have some concerns.

I was prescribed a topical gel to apply to the area to prevent infections that I use twice daily. I find it difficult to keep the area dry. The pain has gotten a little better but not much at all. I am able to sit but it takes a while to find a comfortable position.

My main concern is drainage. My doctor didn't explain much to me about what to expect during the following days as far as drainage goes (or at least I can't remember). I use gauze that I change 2 or 3 times daily. Bleeding has slowed; sometimes there is very little blood, sometimes there is moderate blood. There is still yellow drainage. I'm not sure if this is normal or a sign of infection.

Overall, everything is going better than expected for me. My first post-op appointment is next week, so I can probably get everything answered by then. I just want to make sure everything goes well and heals correctly.
