hi everyone! Everything seems like its been going really well up until last week. Basically whats going on is that the whole wound has pretty much hardened. I was doing quite a bit of activity last week because I moved, and after a couple days of that it seemed like it was irritated. So, I called my doc again and he gave me antibiotics just to be sure. But is it normal for the wound site to harden? it hasn't gotten worse, nor do i feel like there is an actual cyst under there. I did have 2 surgeries, so maybe that could have something to do with the amount of scar tissue building up? Or the stitches? I don't know... so any advice or insight is VERY much appreciated!!!!!!
Hope you guys are all doing well or on your ways to swift recoveries :p
    Thanks again :)

If you read one of my posts, it was a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned something about hardening of my scar. I freaked out about it very much so at first, but after my original panic, I decided to let it go and hope for the best. It hasn't bothered me since and yes, it is still hard. I believe a lot of it is the tension built up because they stretch and mobilize skin that isn't supposed to be over there. Also, my surgeon tried to explain it to my dad who tried to explain it to me (but I had no idea what the heck they really meant) that they do a layering type of technique with the skin that helps make the scar off the midline without being too sensitive and flimsy. I believe that is what makes it result as a hardened scar.
I do also believe it's quite normal if not actually good for us. I would prefer it to be a bit harder than it being too soft, flimsy, sensitive, etc. It feels a bit weird but I'm sure we'll get used to it.
    Hope all is well :)

Hi Andrea. I have been following your story and I know you had to have more surgery but I'm so glad that you are healing well this time, and hope it continues for you. I just wanted to say that. :)

This is happening to me as well, my surgeon said it is normal for that to happen. It's that darn scar tissue, I am dealing with this right now and can't stand it.

Cathy do you mind if I ask when you had your cleft lift done? My son will soon have his and I am trying to prepare him (but not scare him) about the healing process.

I don't mind the hardening at all. Honestly, it's actually softened up quite a bit since I first noticed it even. It's primarily just the pressure, it's going to be tense from being stretched over so far. Idk.. hopefully it will soften up for you as well, Cathy.

Hi Lilly, it was on January 8th, but just so you know, I am a VERY Slow healer....(This may be due to my diabetes) and I still have an open wound just inches from my rectum, because mine was 25 stitches big and that area is very slow to close. I am sure his healing will be different. My surgeon said he has never in his life seen skin like mine. (Thanks Doc. :)
I Also have a condition called "Hidradenitis Supperativa" which mimics a Pilonidal Cyst in that area (It is also located in my groin, inner and outer labia) , so it could have been a combination of the two, so don't worry too much. I am sure he'll be fine. Thanks Unlucky One...It does go back and forth between soft and hard, we have put it down to scar tissue.

I have a hardened area on either side of the scar. After about 5 months it is still there and I believe it is normal. I have noticed that it is more noticeable after exercise.

I HAVE THE ANSWER FOR YOU, I HAVE HAD 2 SURGERIES 20 YEARS APART,AFTER THE FIRST SURGERY I OF COURSE HAD A BIG SCAR(BOTH SURGERIES WERE OPEN HEALING) AFTER THE SECOND SURGERY WHICH WAS 31/2 YEARS AGO I HEALED FINE WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT THE SCAR TISSUE FROM 2 SURGERIES IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT LEFT A VERY HARD SCAR THAT WAS PAINFUL TO SIT. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET ON CORTISONE AND FOUND THAT CORTISONE IS NOT JUST FOR JOINTS THAT ARE PAINFUL.CORTISONE IS USED FOR ALOT OF OTHER THINGS INCLUDING SOFTING AND DISOLVING SCAR TISSUE.I HAVE HAD 3 SHOTS IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE SCAR AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND EACH TIME THAT AREA EITHER QUIT HURTING OR THE PAIN WAS REDUCED BY 95%. A DERMOTOLIGEST IS WHO YOU NEED TO SEE ABOUT THIS,I HAVE ALSO BEEN GETTING CYSTS ON THE INSIDE OF MY THIGHS AND WHEN I GET ONE I GET A CORTISONE SHOT IN THEM IN WITHIN A WEEK THEY ARE GONE AND DONT COME BACK. I HAVE ALSO FOUND 2 OTHER THINGS THAT HELP WHEN MY SCAR IS BOTHERING ME(BY BOTHERING ME I MEAN JUST ALITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE)#1 I WILL PUT SOME ALOE GEL ON IT BEFORE I GO TO BED AND THE NEXT DAY IT FEELS FINE. #2 2 OR 3 TIMES A WEEK I PUT SOME DMSO(NOT MUCH JUST ALITTLE) ON THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE SCAR THAT IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY BUTT CRACK WHEN I GO TO BED AND THAT MAKES IT FEEL BETTER TOO. DMSO IS A BY PRODUCT OF THE WOOD INDUSTRY, IT IS WHAT MSM IS MADE FROM,DMSO HAS STRONG ANTI INFLAMITORY AND PAIN RELEIVING PROPERTIES,YOU CAN BUY THIS IN HEALTH FOOD STORES(DO NOT BUY DMSO AT THE HARDWARE STORES BECAUSE IT HAS NOT BEEN REFINED.THESE THINGS HAVE WORKED VERY WELL FOR ME, I HOPE THEY WORK FOR YOU. RESEARCH DMSO ON THE NET, IT IS AN AMAZING PRODUCT, SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS HAVE TRIED IT AND NOW USE IT EVERYDAY FOR MUSCLE AND JOINT PAIN
