I have had a Pilonidal Abscess for over a year now and I have figured out a reasonable process for people who are avoiding surgery.

A little background about myself is that I had it happen the first time in April 2015. I didnt know what was happening and I went to emergency. They had it lanced. The shot was extremely painful, most pain I ever felt from a doctor. 8-9 out of 10 on my pain scale. After this healed, My surgeon recommend Hot baths for 45 minutes to 1 hour and i started doing them daily. The next few flare ups popped naturally during my hot bathes. It did hurt to walk for 3 days but then they burst naturally. I never had any further issues other then the fill up and burst in the tub.

I am going to explain what i do below but i wanted to say that my current standing is that i get a minor inflammation every 1-2 months and then it goes away with no pain or bursting.

    LifeStyle Changes I do:
    - Changed my seats to include Coccyx cushions in my car and office seats.
    - Hot bathes(as hot as you can take) nearly every day for 45 minutes. (Twice a day during potential inflammation times)
    - When you feel it coming back, I added 15 minutes of castor oil on the cyst before the hot bath. (Be careful because oil stains) THIS STEP IS A BIG DEAL TO MINIMIZING AN INFLAMMATION COMING!
    -Exercise weekly by running.
    - Changed diet. Doubled vegitables and fruit, cut dairy, red meat, and carbs in half!

I use to have a burst every 1-2 months but after i changed my lifestyle, it has been 6 months with no major pain. This is Just my story and what i do. I am definitely not a doctor and this is just my personal experience. I am not sure if it is all or some of these things, but it has been working well! It doesnt stop them, but it never makes me incapacitated anymore.

Wow, that's good for you! Not only is it helping with your condition, it's also doing other things to keep you healthier. However, wouldn't you rather do a closed-wound surgery or something and just nuke the darn thing one and for all? Your new diet and exercise habits would be great when coupled with the fact that you wouldn't have to try so hard to keep the cyst mitigated.

That's just what I would do, but you're perfectly entitled to your decisions.

My surgeon told me closed wound surgery in that area often becomes infected which then results into them opening it into an EVEN LARGER open wound. This is why i currently changed lifestyle.
