I just had a cyst removed from the top of my buttcheek (lucky spot!) on Thursday, 2/9. My procedure was open healing excision. They left me no instructions other than "don't touch packing. change outer dressing as needed." I went to the doctor for a post-op checkup yesterday, and I'm assuming he changed the packing, even though I didn't feel much. He never mentioned anything of it, and I'm not really sure what to do at this point. Any help would be appreciated! Cleaning the wound feels like I'm being stabbed by 1,000 knives and needles, and there's no way to actually get the packing all the way into the wound.

I've had my PC drained twice now, and I'm going again tomorrow because it has returned. When i went in for the first I was very confused about everything as well. When you went in for you're post op checkup they should have removed the packaging to let the wound heal, but it seems like they instructed you to place a new packing by yourself? Is this the case?

Call the doctor! or look to see if there is any packing in there if he took it out then just use something to cover where the packing was because it may still drain a little! dont dig anything inside the wound it needs to heal from the inside out! typically in a draining process they open it, drain it, pack it, then you go back in and they take the packing out and cover it with gauze and send you on your way you dont have to do anything else other than keep gauze over it! and take it easy!

Yes, we were instructed to take the packing out and just leave it covered. The hole is no bigger than a marble. How do I go about cleaning it? It stings a whole lot trying to use anything. Thanks for the replies!!

I tried showering, but when the water hit the wound, I thought I was gonna pass out! Would using a spray bottle be better?

Keep your back turned away from the shower head, or take a bath! Dont take a shower see if that works, or you could keep the gauze over the wound while you shower so the water doesn't hit it, but it still gets wet and sorta washed out in a more gentle way... just make sure u get it dry afterwards! That's the most important

I've been to the doctor twice this week. One was because they told me I do need to pack the wound, so I went in so they could show me how. Today I went because I must've pulled a clot out and had some more bleeding than usual. He used silver nitrate (OUCH!!!!) and said the wound is doing well so far.

Hi everyone, it's been almost 3 weeks since my open wound excision, and it's been healing great. The gauze is barely staying in the wound now, I have no pain at all, and can sit/walk normally... still can't sit in a car seat though, so I can't drive quite yet. Any suggestions?

A coccyx cushion would help. You can get one for $15 at medical supplies stores.
I bought 2, one for home, one for my car.
How deep was your incision? That's amazing it's healed up so fast.
I had open wound excision 3 months ago, and am still in hella pain.

Not really sure how deep it was, but we couldn't see the end of it when we changed the packing for the first time. I'm guessing the location and size of it helped a lot. The only real pain I was in was after the doctor used silver nitrate on it, but other than that... it's been smooth sailing.

I read your blog, and noticed you're having problems with diarrhea... have you tried taking probiotics? They do wonders if medicine is playing around with your stomach. I hope everything works out for you ASAP!!

Can't really afford another prescription even over the counter. I did see my Doctor a few weeks ago about my diarrhea. He didn't do much. He did say he thinks my Irritable Bowel Syndroms is a seperate issue from my Pilonidal Disease. I may go back and ask to be referred to a Gastronologist if my wound pain ever settles down.

I'm not sure which came first, my PD or IBS. My original surgeon did say having a Pilonidal Abcess can screw up your bowels.

Just an update of how I'm doing. It's been 1 month and 10 days since my surgery (open wound excision), and I just started driving without a cushion a few days ago.. The wound is still discharging some "slime" as my doctor put it, and he thinks it should be closed within 2-3 weeks. We're only using a .5"x.5" piece of gauze to pack the wound with, changing it twice daily to let it air out some. The only pain I have is when I lay on my back or sit all the way back on a couch. For some reason, I don't think the "slime" (whitish colored pus mixed with a tiny bit a blood) is normal. Does anyone have opinions on this?

Final (hopefully) update on my healing: I visited the doctor on 3/26, he said that the wound looks really good and I could stop packing it. Just have to swipe the area with peroxide once a day and cover it. It's basically a small cut right now, so I'm hoping it'll be totally closed shortly.

I wish my wound healed this fast! I got surgery about 2 months and 1 week ago and although the wound is a lot shallower than it originally was, I feel like I can see no end in sight. I'm sure you've found out by now that the "slime" is normal, assuming it's not thick; but either way, you're nearly fully healed.
I'm surprised you're having to use peroxide because it's actually pretty harsh and can kill new tissue growth.
Anyway, good luck on healing completely; and feel lucky, you've done it fast and easily!

Just keep your head up! Luckily being 22 and having a dry/warm winter in New York, I wasn't confined to my house. I let it air out as much as possible, watched my diet and tried to walk around to get a little exercise. Like I said in the previous post, it's pretty much just a small cut right now. Still can't lay on my back or sit on a couch normally. But other than that, I'm not limited. Good luck to you as well... and I must say... I LOVE YOUR SHIRT! :)
