    Need advice/insight.

I'm posting regarding my son (Type 1 diabetic), age 18, on insulin pump.

    PRE SURGERY:
-sinus opening discovered 2 weeks ago after body aches, high blood sugars, then sudden pain like he'd fallen on his tailbone
    - obvious dimples from previous cysts/openings (though he never noticed a problem before)
    - sinus was about 1.5" above anus
-while waiting for surgery all symptoms got worse (surgeon called in antibiotic)
-took antib. for 4 days prior to surgery
    - had outpatient excision of pilonidal cyst (closed wound- tracks were removed)

    POST SURGERY:
-Surgeon said no need to continue with antib. after surgery (no other special instructions except shower & wash it)
    - blood sugar is high (300s)
-nausea but able to keep food & fluids down
-1 day post op we called nurse about level 8 pain (dr said continue pain meds but alternate between with Advil)
-now 4 days post-op & he has fever of 101 & chills w/ level 9 pain, radiating heat & puss when he presses near incision
    - notified surgeon. He called in new antib. & said come in tomorrow morning & they'll probably have to "open it"

QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT's "TYPICAL" (sorry so many!)
-does anyone have exp. with this surgery & type 1 diabetes?
-what will happen when they open it?
Do they just clip off the stitches?
    Are there layers?
-will they do this in the office?
    -will they use a local?
-should i call the local ELKS Wound Center to see if they can help since diabetics heal slower & dont fight infection well?
    - will i need a referral for a facility like this?
-will he likely be able to march in his high school graduation in 4 days with the newly opened wound?
-how long before he can be comfortable sitting? He starts college in September
-how long before he can play sports?( Recreationally)
-what kind of light is best exposure for wound besides sun? (he'd have to spread cheeks to accomplish that)

Hi, my 14yr old daughter (also type 1, on pump) just had her Pilondia Cyst drained yesterday by our local ER. She was in so much pain and we had no idea what it was. She seems to be recovering well, numbers are fine so far, no high temp. I'm worried about the heal time -- how long did it take for your son to heal? Also, I'm concerned that they only drained it. What did the dr tell you to convince you to remove your son's cyst? I'm worried that my daughter being diabetic, this might be a problem until it is completely removed? Any advice or tips or whatever would be greatly appreciated!
