HELP! Post pilonidal surgery dressing changing

Hi all,

I have had a pilonidal surgery on the 2nd of December which left me with an open wound of 1.5cm wide and 1cm deep. I have spoken to my GP surgery and seems like they do not have any available appointments with nurses for the next 2 weeks. I have been told to go to a walk in centre and get it done initially daily and today I have been told to do it every 2 days. My problem is that all the walk in centres I have been to so far are very time consuming and close around 6PM. I have a Monday to Friday job until 6PM and I cannot take any more time off. I have been told by the nurses that I cannot change the dressing myself as it needs packing as well but I am inclined to do it myself as it doesn't look like a complicated procedure and I know how to spot the signs of an infection. My question is, taking into consideration the small size of the incision would it be reasonable to do it myself and get it checked every weekend by a nurse or do I have to keep on going to walk in centres and spend at least 2 hours waiting for a procedure that takes around 3 minutes to be completed?

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi hope your coping ok, I had an excision 3weeks ago and still packing it daily it is 2.5cm in length 1.5cm wide and 2.5cm deep. My district nurse team arranged to do all the packing changes daily at home they called me even before I left the hospital. However I was not a fan of the waiting in between 8-5 everyday so they shown my wife how to do it and it literally takes 5mins. Pull off the plaster, shower, remove packing, clean with boiling water then repack loosely and cover, literally that's it and mines healed nicely. I see the nurse again tomorrow and hopefully I no longer have to pack it. Your best bet might be to have a family member shown and then they'll prescribe the aquacel dressings for you. Hope you get this sorted.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your reply. How is your wound doing? I am on my second week now, apparently the depth of the wound is about half of what it was initially.
I was wondering if you noticed any differences in how the wound heals with time? Has yours shrunk in size and do you still have to pack it daily?
Also, have they told you how long you will have to pack it for?

Had the nurse visit today and it's healed now no more packing and its pretty much closed 3 weeks in total which is pretty good according to the nurse as she was surprised. I feel more discomfort now though as the skin is obviously closing but that should pass, it was plane sailing from week 2 that's when it really started healing.
