Z-plasty surgery

hey everyone, I am so so glad I came across this forum and for the last 3 years I have been dealing with a recurring pilonidal sinus. At 18 I first noticed the pain on the top of my natal cleft area and I thought I had bruised my coxic bone. Me being the stress head I am bent over and looked in the mirror to see a little pin hole you could fit a sewing needle through. I asked all my friends if they had this as well and surely they all said no. So I google doctored the bizarre pin hole and pain in the top of my natal area and turns out google was actually correct I had a pilonidal sinus after receiving confirmation from a doctor. They put me on antibiotics and sent me on my way.

At 19 around a year later the pain came back and within 24 hours the pain was so bad I actually wanted to die. No one understand how much pain I actually was in from sitting at my desk and work or even just walking was something out of a nightmare. I went to the doctors again and they told me I would need surgery. The next day I saw the surgeon and he completed the open wound method that afternoon and I stayed in hospital overnight. 8 weeks of daily trips to the nurse to have my gauze re dressed. Three weeks off work. I lost my job coming back which was devastating as well. My last consultation with the surgeon showed that I had finally healed however a new pit hole had formed. I cried my eyes out at the thought of having this again. He assured me that it may never flare up. So off I went on my way until not even 12 months has passed. In one day my pilonidal had returned and blew up the size of half a golf ball. For three days I was vomiting from the extreme pain and discomfort and all the pain killers. I didn't have private health at this stage so I had no option but to wait. About 4 days into my flare out my cyst burst and it was so disgusting. A whole lot of blood, puss and hair debris had come pouring out. The smell was something I can't explain. The pain relief was however instant and after a week I was back to normal self. I went back to the original surgeon and showed him photos and explained what had happened he then booked me in with a plastic surgeon to suss out a different method of a z-plasty. I waited a month to see this new surgeon and two weeks after meeting I had my second surgery which was last Thursday and I am still recovering. Healing process has been so much better than the open wound method this time round. Who has had the z-plastic as well and have you had any issues at all? Or a recurrence??

So glad I can reach out to people here!! I felt so so alone not being able to have anyone to relate to as I have been extremely embarrassed about this whole thing as it's in the worst spot possible

Hi Brooklyn,
I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question but have tears of compassion after reading your story.
I'm truly sorry you have suffered so much and hope you continue to post here with updates on your progress.

I've never heard of a z-plasty and will look it up. My son (21) is in a state of panic after seeing an obnoxious colorectal surgeon
who explained his condition in an alarming manner. He was told he has two very deep pilonidal wounds and the only
option is cleft lift surgery. Based on your story, I think we need a second and third opinion!

Thank you for this post. I hope you continue to heal and regain your life.
