Just had my surgery today. I was the only one on her list at the Spire! Can you believe it? I expect it was a case no one wants to do it during August on account of school holidays.

She said it went ok and was successful. Apparently took out 4 pits! Now starts the long journey of recovery. No exercise for 8 weeks according to the post op care! This sucks!

Nice one. On the plus side you'll never have to deal with this again. Just a bit of recovery and fixed. Did you have general anaesthetic?

Fingers crossed this is it mate. Don’t know, you can never say with this horrendous disease!

Yes they put me under sedation - the anaesthetics really were on point. Senapati got right to business and got the job done it seems. Just need to recover now - bloody pain in the arse (quite literally).. this is the part I dread and worth the most about!!!

Mate - how did you put the dressing on each day? Like I mean do you pack the would with gauze and then put a big plaster on? Or is it loose after you’ve put the dressing on?

Have you got any openings?

I had a small split at the bottom of my scar, I put a small piece of guaze inside the wound to pack it out (depending on size of opening, mine was 1cmx1cm) then dressing on top. Obviously make sure its very clean with water and hibiscrub. Used cotton pads to apply. This took a couple months to heal.

Saline pods for wound washing is even better than water, can pick these up on amazon.

If no openings, I would just clean and apply a dressing

I have a small wound on the side of the cleft where the original cyst would form and then now after the first surgery where the infection/discharge was recurring.

She has made a cut to remove any infected tissue and left it open and then removed pits from the cleft and stitched those up.

Thanks for the response. I’ll use sterile water to clean the wound and pack it with gauze. Do you try and make the dressing as tight as possible so the gauze doesn’t move around?

She told me its normal for a small split to appear. Rare to not have one - so dont worry. I'd just put dressing on how you feel comfortable, not crazy tight - just so its secure

No worries, let me know how it goes mate
Hey mate - I am sorry to bother you but I have a question re recovery. so my open wound has healed but where the pit was excised there is a small hole still there after nearly 4 weeks. Did you have any pits and did this happen to you?

I had 4 pits, 3 are fully closed but one still has some small hole to be filled/ covered with new skin..

I'm not sure about pits.

I did have a small wound at the bottom of my surgery which lasted a few months after 1x1cm. Told by Senapati that this happens 90% of the time and it eventually heals up.

When's your next follow up appointment? How big is the hole.

Hey, I think I’m currently in a similar situation with some little weeping pits forming. I had my surgery about 5 weeks ago. Have you had any progress with yours closing since ?

Mine appears to have healed fully. Just keep the area clean with sterile water and make sure you dry before putting the dressing on. It needs about 8 weeks to heal fully. I didn’t do any exercise and I basically wore boxers the entire time.

Also you should change the dressing during the day if you feel uncomfortable or it starts to itch.. I used to to do that when i was uncomfortable.

Ah That’s great yours are all healed. They’ve given me some inadine patches to help dry it out and I’ve been airing it out as often as possible. I had an open wound from the first op for over a year which never healed, so nice to know I’m on the right track hopefully :)

Did yours heal at the surface level or sort of stay as little dimples?

No it healed completely.. you end up with a scar and obviously the skin curves in where where there was a deep cut but it really does heal.

I haven’t even gone back for my follow up. I ended spraining my ankle so I wasn’t able to go back down south from London and the wound has healed completely so did not think it was needed anymore..

I hope you recover soon. Just make sure you keep it clean and dry and don’t wear any tight clothing. That’s the best way forward.. how long has it been since your surgery?

Thank you for giving me hope :) since this surgery it’s been 6 weeks. But it was so taped and glued for about two weeks the delayed bits weren’t noticed till about them so they’ve at least been their for four weeks. Hopefully about half way through based on what I’ve read

Hey there. I had a failed open excision for PD previously with a surgeon in Bromley. I then saw Senapati and had cleft lift performed in 2017. I was out the hospital the same day, took a few months to completely heal but I've been healed for 5 years now, best decision I ever made. She's an amazing surgeon.
Sorry to intervene on your conversation. Just wondering how much the operation is with miss Senapati at Spire please?

Thanks

Hi Rowan,

I’ve not had the op with dr Senapati yet. But mine isn’t looking hopeful to heal after my recent op. I have my first consult with Dr Senapati this Friday to discuss my next steps after hearing positive stuff about her from this board. It says an initial consult will cost no more than £260 and follow ups are £170. I don’t know about the operation cost yet, but I’ll be asking that question on Friday so I can get back to you then if you’ve not found out by then :)

Hi all, I thought I would share my recent experience of having the Cleft Lift procedure with Miss Senapati.

For background, I've suffered with this terrible condition for a number of years. I've had a variety of different procedures in the hope to resolving it; karydis flap and open wide excisions. Each time they take many months to heal, often get numerous infections and continually break down.

After discovering this forum I arranged a private consultation with Miss Senapati in Portsmouth. The initial consultation fee to see Miss Senapati was £260. Despite previous failed surgeries she said I would be suitable for the Cleft Lift procedure (this link contains a previous presentation she did on it - http://2207941.mediaspace.kaltura.c...ic+approaches+to+Pilonidal+Disease/1_qy5trier)

Miss Senapati explained that she is unable to state in advance whether the operation would be a success or not. She said she has a 95% success rate of it not coming back. A third of wounds break down after the operation (typically at the bottom of the wound) and eventually heal by themselves a couple of weeks on. If part of the wound breaks down, it still goes on to have a 95% success rate of it not coming back.

Fast forward to the operation, I had mine done at Portsmouth, it took approximately one hour. It was done under local anaesthetic with sedation (I was really surprised by this as my previous operations have been under general). However, I didn't feel a thing. First thing I remember is being back in the room. After a couple of hours I was able to return home. As part of the Cleft Lift procedure Miss Senapati places a drain within the wound so any excess fluid doesn't collect. This is usually removed a couple of days after the operation (either at the hospital or by your local GP/district nurse).

In terms of the recovery, Miss Senapati advised being signed off work for 2 weeks and to avoid heavy lifting/exercising for 8 weeks. During my recovery I only experienced minimal discomfort. Compared to other surgeries which I've had I couldn't believe how pain free I was! To date, my recovery is going really well, the wound hasn't broke down and hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be able to start exercising again.

The total fee for the Cleft Lift procedure was £2,500 (includes anaesthetic and hospital fees). If a follow-up appointment is required it is £170.

Saw Senapati as an NHS patient, no charge. Just paid for travel and hotel. You could enquire to see if this is still an option
