First Time Posting after Open Excision

Hi Everyone,

I am almost four weeks past from an open excision of a Pilonidal Sinus (First time ever experiencing this disease at age 31, who would have thought) and my initial wound measured 5 cm long X 3 cm wide x 2.2 cm deep. After doing a terrible job packing the wound living by myself, I started going to the wound care clinic about 1 week after surgery, which has been very helpful. I've been on a wound vac for almost two weeks now, it's not so bad.

At my checkup today, the Dr. said that the wound looks good, and that the measurements are now 4 cm long by .6 cm wide by 1.1 cm deep. My question for some of you is: did you find that the depth of the wound sometimes took longer to heal than the other parts? I'm trying to stay patient, but after pretty rapid reduction in depth, my wound has stayed pretty much the same for almost two weeks.

After 18 days on the wound Vac, the wound has diminished significantly and my doctor thinks it may be healed by next week! I am being asked to change a dressing on Friday that will use endoform within a small wound tunnel, hydrofera blue as a cover, and then a secondary dressing.

For those of you going the open excision route, don't give up and seriously consider being seen by a Wound Care specialist, I feel like it's made all the difference in the world

How was the first few days after open? No staples?
I had no staples or any stitches. The first few days were rough because I was packing the wound poorly (Not deep enough, I live by myself so it was a tough angle), but I did go to a Wound Care clinic about 10 days out and it seriously made everything easier. If it's an option in your area, I highly recommend it

Just a follow up: My surgeon and Wound Care doctor both confirmed that the wound is now fully closed! I have a little bit of folliculitis around the skin near the wound, probably from the tape, but overall I'm in good shape! For the open wound people out there, don't give up!
