My pilonidal story looks a bit different as to what you are experiencing, but I do resonate with the hopeless feeling of not having a solution to such a persistent problem. I had one abscess that ruined a trip to Europe and then on and off achiness for the year after. I decided to jump right in and get the cleft lift with Dr. Immerman in Eau Claire, WI. I'm 4 weeks post-op and feel amazing (I'm happy to provide more details should you be interested in the surgery and recovery thus far).

I'm not sure where you live - but if you live anywhere in the U.S., I'd highly recommend giving Dr. Immerman's office in Eau Claire WI a call (Dr. Steven C. Immerman - Evergreen Surgical Pilonidal Clinic). He is an extremely gifted surgeon and one of the best around when it comes to dealing with pilonidal disease via the cleft-lift procedure (especially in recurrent/complicated patients). Check-out this link where he discusses how to deal with an open excision that doesn't seem to be healing: Help! I just had a wide excision! - Evergreen Surgical Pilonidal Clinic . You're not doomed, there are options for you.

I know I'm only 4 weeks post-op, but I truly feel such relief knowing that
a.) I had the right guy to take care of the issue (wouldn't have wanted any other surgeon to perform the cleft-lift on me) and
b.) this issue is in the past and I can move forward with my life.

Good luck with everything. Let me know if you have any questions...and hang in there!

My son is having cleft lift with Dr Sternberg in San Fran on March 3 - he is highly recommended as is Dr Immerman- I’m glad you’re having great results - I will report back afterwards - we are very nervous especially with all this COVID happening now

That's great - I'd be interested to hear how it goes for your son and how the recovery is. If it's anything like my experience, it'll be a breeze! I too had to deal with the covid situation - what a drag! The surgical center had me get a covid test a day or two before and quarantine until the procedure. I felt very safe and had no issues on the backend. Good luck!

Hi, I am so sorry to hear about your struggles with the wound. I experienced the exact same situation for 2 years. From Dec. 2018-Nov 2020, I had an open wound that would close and then reopen repeatedly. The only way I had it fixed was by going to Dr. Immerman in Wisconsin to have the cleft lift surgery performed. I am 10 weeks post op now, and I feel more like myself than ever. It completely fixes the problem and there is no open wound. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about the procedure- it was the only thing that helped me with a wound that wouldn’t close! Wishing you good luck.

My name is Brian Shrager. I am the Medical Director of the Pilonidal Treatment Center of New Jersey (www.ptcnj.com). I am one of only a handful of high volume cleft-lift surgeons in the US. I take on the most difficult nonhealing pilonidal wounds. I offer also a more limited “simple pilonidal cystectomy”, pit-picking, and endoscopic pit-picking (EPSIT).

if you are scheduled for a lay-open surgery, a traditional closed surgery by a nonspecialist, or any other flap closure (e.g. Limberg, z-plasty.., please please consider cancelling your procedure, and getting help from a specialist. We are here to end this ordeal for you. You need no longer suffer.

My son, 29, is having cleft lift in San Fran with Sr Sternberg who is one of the premier surgeons in this area. The procedure is March 3 and we have to travel but it’s worth it. My son has had the cyst for 10 years with 2 unsuccessful lancings and it has gotten to an advanced stage. I see a lot about Dr Immerman but not much about Dr Sternberg so I will report back after the procedure.

They are both with excellent reputations. I have personally been mentored by Dr. Immerman, and I am uniquely familiar with his work. I cannot say however that he is a better choice.
