I had my surgery on the 9/05/2015. I’ve been a suffer for over a decade but the infection was primarily dormant with little pain/discomfort over the years.
Two weeks prior to the surgery it got pretty bad with a lot of redness, blood, and pus. The doctor saw it and immediately diagnosed it as pilonidal sinus. Luckily it was still fairly small. By the time I went in for surgery, it had discharged completely and subsided a fair bit. I came out of surgery with a cut 2 inches long, 1 inch deep, and about an inch wide when streched. The doctor has told me that it’ll heal on its own without stitches and has placed no restrictions on what I can/can’t do. I’m able to sit, walk, sleep on my back without much trouble or discomfort. The dressing need to be changed twice/thrice daily and I’m able to do this on my own as well whilst looking into a mirror. I also haven’t taken any pain killers since after the surgery.
The cut is supposed to heal in about 6 weeks and that’s when my next appointment with the doctor is. I was very worried before I went in for surgery and even now, looking at the open wound/cut gives me the shivers. But, everyone reading this, know that you’re not alone. This has happened to a lot of people and as my doctor said, it’s been removed/fixed too many times for any major complications to arise during surgery. As for the recovery, be positive. It’s not as bad as you’ve been reading. The sooner you accept what needs to be done, the sooner you’ll concentrate on recovery, healing, and going back to your regular life.
