Hi! I thought I would drop by and share my story! I’m 16 years and about two months ago I was diagnosed with a Pilonidal Cyst. I started feeling pain right above my tailbone and it felt like a massive pimple coming up. I didn’t think anything of it until I started to wake up in the night; multiple times. I then started to get very worried when I was walking in school and my backpack kept hitting the area. The pain started to become extremely worse. I talked to my mom and we went to our family doctor right away and they told me I had an infected cyst. My doctor said it was uncommon to get one of these at this age and it usually showed up in men. So, with that said, I was kind of worried. I have very dark features and tend to be on the hairier said. She said that’s what caused it. Anyway, my doctor told me to soak in hot water everyday and put heat on the area every 20 minutes until the cyst was ready to drain. So, I did that… for about a week. I spent a whole week out of school. Now, the pain that I went through was unbelievable. I couldn’t sit, hardly walk, and spent most of the time laying on my back. It hurt even to roll over. The medicine I was one had me sleeping about 16 hours out of the day and the pain medication wasn’t a help at all. After days of terrible pain, I finally went back to the doctors and had it looked at. They decided it was time to lance it. Now, this experience was something else. I don’t know about all of you, but it was the worst feeling in the world. First they injected me with pain killers, but they didn’t work at all. My cyst was too infected for the medication to work. So, I felt it all. My doctor lanced it and I was on the operating table cry with two nurses hands holding me done. It took about five minutes, but it felt like ages. The pain that I went through with the lancing was worth it though because I was immediately better. I could stand and walk around freely a few hours after the lancing and was able to try and get some homework done. But, I over did it. I ended up in the emergency room the night after the lancing because I had overworked myself the whole day. My whole right side went numb and I was very scared. So, I good night of sleep cured me, but I was warned not to do anything the next day. Another thing they did after the lancing was packing the wound. That experience was almost as bad as the lancing. The process usually should only take about one minute, but it took about an hour for me because I couldn’t stand the pain. Two times a day for about two weeks, it was the worse, but it got better with each packing. Now, about a month and a half later, I was scheduled for surgery. I was all healed up and acted as if nothing had happened. I could still feel the cyst, but the pain was completely gone. My doctor said the only way to combat the cyst was to take it out, and so we did. The surgery was a breeze and it didn’t hurt at all. The only trouble I found was when they put in the iv, but other than that, it went smoothly. All I had to do was go to sleep and woke u with minor pain, nothing compared to the pain of the infected cyst. I was in and out of the hospital in about 4 hours. Now, four days later, I am able to do all the things a normal person can do. I could sit about one day after the surgery and after I was off the pain medication, I could start driving again. It’s healing so fast and smoothly. I also have to have the wound packed, but that is nothing. The packing doesn’t even hurt, just a little pressure, that’s all. It’s such a relief. Overall, I thank god for my doctor and the great job that he did. The healing process didn’t hinder my daily life at all. That’s my story, for now!
