Audrey’s story

February 5, 2013

When I was 16 I started to get a bump on my tailbone. I had no idea what it was but it kept getting bigger to where I could barely sit down because it hurt so bad. It was red and about the size of a golfball. I didn’t have any liquid come out of it, but I finally went to my local doctor to get it checked out.

She acted like she knew what it was but had no idea. She told me that it was a form of staff and that I had gotten it from my cousin who had had surgery on her pilonidal cyst a few weeks before. She put me on antibiotics and let me go. It got better, but in the mean time I had to cancel a trip that I was planning to go on because my doctor didn’t want it to burst while I was on the plane. A few months later I was still having some pain and had a bump so I decided to go see a surgen. He informed me of what it really was and told me I needed to get it removed.

I went to the hospital the next week and got it removed. The surgery wasn’t too terrible, but the healing process was a pain. I had a wound that was 2in deep, 5in long, 2in wide. I got a wound vac to help with the healing. I had that for three weeks, nurses coming to my house every two days to change the dressings. It was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever done and I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone. It’s been four years since I had my first flare up. I have had a few times where the scar has hurt a bit, but it usually doesn’t last long. Until recently at least, I am starting to have pain on my tailbone again and can’t sit very well. I don’t feel a lump yet, but I have a feeling that it is coming back again.

Not looking forward to going through the whole procedure again if that is what it takes.
