birthday girl’s story

April 18, 2011

I am 20 years old, female and in college. A week ago, I felt a swelling at the base of my tailbone. I remembered it happening in high school once, but that time it cleared up on its own. I don’t even remember any drainage. I was hoping that this one would go away on its own too, but it kept getting worse, and now I can’t sit through class. I just went to the university health services and they told me I have a pilonidal cyst/abscess, and scheduled me for surgery on Friday.

On top of the horrible embarrassing nature of this stupid condition, my 21st birthday is 8 days after my surgery. I’m SO upset. I will be spending my 21st locked up in my room with a huge bandage on my butt, and for the rest of my life when people ask me what I did for my 21st, I’m going to have to come up with a story, because this one is just too embarrassing. What did I do to deserve this? Ughghgh.
