Age: 22 I started to notice a pain in my tailbone area during final exam week, fall semester. Didn’t think much of it. I went on vacation to the Philippines a few days after finals week. The constant sitting due to travel, not having access to a shower, and the humid air all contributed for a pilonidal cyst to form. However, I had no idea what a pilonidal cyst was, so I just thought at the time that my tailbone bruise just got worse from the constant sitting.
I dealt with the pain for 3 weeks. The pain was so bad near the end of the trip, painkillers wouldn’t help and any type of sitting position would be extremely uncomfortable. I visited an urgent care clinic a day after I got back to America. They diagnosed me with a pilonidal cyst and did a incision and draining procedure. It’s been two weeks since the procedure and everything has been feeling great. I’ve been running and doing various exercises without discomfort. However, there is a very small pit in my midline that has been worrying me. There has been no discharge or pain coming from it. But from what I’ve read online, everyone always seems to have a second occurrence with this issue. I’ll be keeping it clean in the meantime. I’m trying to avoid a surgery at all costs.
Hopefully, this thing won’t bug me for a couple of years.
