Hello – I am new to the group. I joined because my 17 year old son had his first surgery in January (at the time he was 16) and the pediatrician immediately sent us to a general surgeon. We were told that he would open it up and that he would be driving in a week and packing on his own in a week.
Needless to say he basically gutted him in surgery and we have been dealing with an open wound. Around late May the surgeon said he needed another surgery. I was not confident with him after the first one so we got a second opinion with a colorectal surgeon. He has been picking the wound and trying to keep the drainage flowing.
In July his wound closed (we thought – wow this is a miracle) Two weeks later a bubble formed. We new immediately this time what it was (now that this was our second time). Doc went in to open it up and drain. He was able to see just how large the cavity was below (remember he came in after most of the original wound healed). He suggested a flap surgery and referred us to a plastic surgeon that he works closely with.
Once our son saw the photos of the procedure he said HE IS NOT HAVING the surgery. So the doctor said we just keep doing what we are doing while he can tolerate it. As you can imagine how hard it is for a 17 year old athlete in his senior year. I cry almost daily. I just need a safe place to talk about this and get through this with him
