Katy’s story

April 9, 2013

I am a 14 year old girl living in Maryland. I first noticed something was wrong in August 2011, the week before my PC became really bad and noticeable I was at summer camp.

Toward the end of the week I had noticed a pain in my lower back, thinking it was just the cot I was sleeping on was the problem I just left it. Then the next week I could barely walk and in immense pain. After going to the doctors I was put onto some anti-biotics, after about two weeks the problem went away.

Then around the end of November it came back, again I was on anti-biotics, the problem faded, but didn’t go away all the way. By March my doctor recommended I have surgery, it took a while to find a surgeon that would work on children. Once we did he wanted to do surgery immediately, I ended up wait for the school year to end and had surgery in June, it was worse than the surgeon had thought and I had to have more invasive surgery in August. The problem was gone for about three weeks.

Again I had surgery near the end of November. It was back by Christmas, so again I had surgery for the fourth time in early January. It was back by mid- February, by this time I had missed of a month of school total, in March I had a particularly bad flare up and missed more than two weeks of school. In early April I had another surgery for a total of five in less then ten months. Because of missing so much school I was failing every one of my classes, we don’t even know if I’m going to pass my grade.

But I thought I should share, and maybe help other people.
