Lindsay’s story

September 18, 2012

Hi all, just a quick post to let everyone know of my progress. I just had an appointment today with the surgeon’s apprentice (as I like to call him) regarding the cleft lift operation I had back in May.

It has been 8 weeks since I had last seen them. Anyway, I feel shattered to say that I’m STILL dealing with this. It has been a long road with my first operation in November last year and my second in May of this year. I’ve had to quit my full time job (thankfully it wasn’t my dream job) and have been moping around since whilst the blasted wound heals. I really am fortunate to be still living at home with my parents at the age of 23 and to be receiving the sickness benefit so I can add a bit of dosh to my bank each week and pay for expenses. Things could be much worse off.

I decided to enter study again at the start of the year (2 year quantity surveying diploma) having recently completed a 3 year property degree just so I could put some energy into something to keep me “ahead” and not “sitting on my hands” so to speak. This has been a good decision for me. It also looks like I may have a part time PA role secured for a while. I start tomorrow. My second operation couldn’t have gone better to be honest. Things have healed nicely all except for an area about the size of my little finger.

Whilst it may not seem like much it’s still holding me back from exercising like I’d like to. I still can’t sit for prolonged periods of time. If I do the area that is unhealed will bleed a bit. Lucky for me I don’t need to wear any pads as the area doesn’t constantly leak. I see this as a sign (and so does the surgeon’s apprentice) that things are going great and it just has to heal.

So where to from here? I was advised to shave the area again and that’s about it. I may decide to head to my GP on Friday to grab some antibiotics for 10 days just to help things along and reduce any chances of infection. I’m eating as healthy as I possibly can and drinking plenty of water. So the health front is covered.

A pro tip for anyone in the final stages of healing is to use a hair dryer multiple times a day on cool setting to get some air to the area and dry it out. I’ve been doing this everytime I get out of the shower and before I go to bed but have decided to increase it just to speed up the healing. My next appointment is in another 6 weeks and I’ll post a follow up then.

So, until then stay strong everyone. Ps. I’ll make time to read through the other posts as I haven’t had an opportunity to since my last post.
