Lynne’s story

March 10, 2011

I wanted to share my story so that no-one gets as stressed out about this as I was. I first realised what this was back in January when I grew my “tail”. I went to the dr who gave me antibiotics but I ended up in A&E and got it lanced and drained on the ward with no anaesthetic.

3/4 weeks later it was back (I’ve heard that lancing and draining can work on its own but unfortunatly that was not the case for me) I went to A & E again, I was operated on to have the full thing removed and my wound was packed and has been packed everyday since my op. For those of you that are worried about pain… I have like no pain threshold whatsoever and I have only taken your bog standard paracetamol and I am in no pain at all!

I was a bit sore when I woke up from the operation buuuut I spoke to the nurse who gave me a tablet and I was fine within 30mins. When I got home from the surgery – I was tired and stiff and in the few days after that I worried myself sick that this was going to come back and took panic attacks and everything but after a visit to my GP (who was very sympathetic) he told me that the recurrance is so low after having this surgery and that the feelings I was feeling after the surgery were totally normal (hence the Diazepam) lol but don’t be affected the way I was – I felt so low for days until it lifted.

The wound packing – DO NOT WORRY!! this is not sore at all (I didnt find it sore at all) if anything I felt a little prod but honestly don’t worry at all and if you are worried, take your pain meds like an hour/30mins before you get it changed. I can honestly say the worst part of the dressing changes were taking the sticky plaster dressing off lol I’m in Scotland so the District Nurses come out to my house everyday (amazing people) They have taken such good care of me and my wound! They don’t think it will come back, my surgeon is feeling very positive and most importantly, I dont think it will come back.

Honestly, anyone who’s suffering from this and scared of pain in relation to aftercare as much as I was honestly – I wasn’t in any pain really and this is coming from a paranoid stress head haha! Do not worry at all! If I can do this, so can you!! I hope my experience has helped put some minds at rest in regards to being in pain. I am going to buy a coccyx cushion to help take the pressure off my tailbone and I now drink 2-4 litres of water/diluting juice a day xxxxx
