Ryan M’s story

January 3, 2012

I am so confused with what is happening to me. About four months ago I noticed a slight pain on my tailbone and I was sure I injured the actual bone. I noticed it first after running. I rested a few days and tried running again.

The next day my tailbone was in a great amount of pain. Every day seemed to get worse at this point. I couldn’t bend over to get dressed and I could barely walk. I finally went to urgent care after noticing swelling at the top of the butt crack( a swelled up oval shape with a crack in the middle following the shape of the butt crack). I had an x ray which showed nothing (obviously) and was finally told I had a pilonidal cyst.

I had a small operation with many lidocaine shots and a small hole that was packed and repacked every three days for a week, totaling 2 re-packs. I finally felt great after 2-3 weeks but now 6 weeks after I am feeling slight pain again just like its on my tailbone. I feel like my situation is different because I never had any kind of mark or hole that drained. It just built up pressure very deep until it was cut open. I also experienced extreme illness in the week before my operation that progressed as my tailbone pain and inflammation did. There seemed to be a connection.

I still feel week and have a lot of mucous. I haven’t read much about people being really sick from this and also not having any natural drainage prior to an operation. Could these things be really deep? I want things to go back to normal and for this to be over. It’s messing up my work and everyday routines and holding down my spirits. I just feel very confused.
