Ryan’s story

March 6, 2012

In the summer of 2008 I had a pionidal cyst removed from the natal cleft region. It was the diameter of a dime. After surgery I followed all necessary protocols to allow the wound to heal.

Within about two weeks I was continuing regular activity, but noticed a lot of discomfort. After several more trips to the doctor’s office to have the wound scraped and silver nitrate applied it still was not healing correctly. It hurt a ton. At one point I required vicodin. In November of that same year the surgeon performed another surgery, this time doing a small flap. This seemed to work as I didn’t have as much drainage or issues for about 6 months. Then unfortunately while playing softball I fell on my backside and caused some sort of damage.

A week later and in excruciating pain, a hole at the top of the wound appeared and out came a lot of blood and puss. Needless to say the wound had broken down and now there was a trac in the inch size wound. This inch size wound would fill up like a baloon and pop every two weeks for the next 48 months. It would always cause a ton of pain and discomfort. I am reluctant to have surgery again as it didn’t work the two other times. I am also reluctant to do a cleft lift as I am not suffering from sinuses and it seems like over kill. I have consulted many doctors who all want to cut me open because of a half inch diameter mound with a small 1 cm hole at the top that heals and reopens after the wound gets filled with blood. I am hoping there is another option as I do not want to go through surgery again. I have lived the past 3 years with this, constantly having to use maxi pads, but currently I do not suffer from too much discomfort. Not to mention my health insurance is no help.

I am a very healthy male, 180lbs, 5’11, I work out 4 times a week, watch what I eat, don’t smoke and rarely drink. There is no outside influence that would cause this wound not to heal.
