I am 20 years old, I have had 2 surgeries so far to remove the same cyst.
The cyst started in probably 9th grade but never hurt or bothered me, in fact all it did was occasionally release a vary minor amount of liquid and dirty my shorts. After aabout 5 years of having the cyst I finaly had it checked out by a doctor (self concious about the brown/red stains on my pants) and was told it was a pilonidal cyst.
Surgery 1… General out patient procedure, the surgeon removed the cyst which at the time seemed to be rather large (aa 2 or 3 inch incision) and vlosed the wound with that fancy skin glue, I returned to work in a week and was able to sit more or less without any major discomfort. 3 weeks after surgery the now “healed” skin had a decent scar and looked ok until the scar burst open and released a large amount of blood. The wound had formed a hematoma and filled with blood for reasons I did not know at the time.
Went back to doctor, doctor said nothing to worry about (bull hockey) the wound will be left open and should heal on its own..
3 months later and after loads of nasty bloody packing the wound had mostly filled in when I discovered a vent hole… The doctor had totaly missed 2/3 of the cyst and it had grown back rather aggressively. The vent hole continued to expand and eventually leaked good amounts of stuff daily. 2nd surgery set.
Surgery 2… The surgeon wanted to make sure to remove all the cyst this time (because obviously that wasn’t the goal of the first surgery) same out patient type set up. When I woke up I learned that the doctor had removed about 6 inches of my rearward crack including the old site. The area was again stitched back up however the top most portion was left open (not sure why but would like to know) due to the larger incision the pain was much more intense, stronger pain killers were perscribed. All the meds led to constipation and a need for suppository laxitives (at least they really did help.. a lot..) sitting is a no go, which is made worse in school..
1 week after the surgery I am able to sit on a pillow in class for short periods before I have to get up and leave class for a moment, the stitches near the bottom bleed minor ly whilst making a #2. Near the top where the wound was left open it bleeds if I sit (some blood and some yellow fluid) I use gauze to absorb the liquid. My stitches are to be removed this Monday (approx. 10 days after the surgery) I will be ever so glad for this to be over so I can get back to work as well as enjoy sitting again!
