I am a 22 year old female. I recently had my first run-in with a pilondial cyst these past couple of weeks. I first thought that it was a bruised or achy tailbone from a 3 hour drive that I had taken the Sunday before.
I started having pain on Monday November 11th by Thursday I couldn’t sit or drive anymore, and by Saturday November 16th it was to the point where I could barely walk, stand, or lay down without being in extreme pain. I went to the urgent care and had the doctor examine it. He said that at the moment it was an abscess but that it wasnt a pilondial cyst yet because it was not close enough to the surface. He gave me a weeks worth of antibiotics and a pain med and told me to take them and come back if it developed into a cyst or if the pain hadn’t subsided. I took both pills religiously and applied a hot compress as directed but the pain was still really bad.
On top of this, the doctor gave me enough antibiotics to take for a week, but gave me a script for less pain meds, so toward the end (the last couple of days) I had to cut the pills in half just so I could have some relief, but the pain just got worse. Today, Friday November 11, I was on my last day of pills, but the pain was so unbarable that I decided to go back to the Urgent care. The doctor looked at the area and said she was going to lance it today. I was almost in tears just from her examining the area and putting on the betadine, then the procedure started. She applied local anesthesia which did absolutely nothing because the area was already so swollen and tender. Then she began to lance the area, which is the worst pain I have endured to date. She had to get a new lance during the procedure because she said that the lance wasn’t cutting the skin as easy as she hoped.
All the time I was crying and shaking from how painful it was. She was very concerned and applied the local several more times, by the end I felt it a little less, but the pain was still really bad. After she drained and irrigated the area she packed it and patched me up with gauze and tape. She gave me Ibuprofen and another pain med to take before I get it packed again on Monday. I am in a lot less pain since I got it drained and I hope it never happens again.
