This all started for me about 5 weeks ago!
21 year old female and currently my life is kinda on hold over this fiasco. I originally just thought it was a pimple that was forming on my tailbone butt region, or an ingrown hair, not a big deal! I continued on with life and tried to ignore it like most other things thinking it would go away… sadly it just got a lot worse. It started to get red and large, and sore to the point where i couldn’t sit down or walk without it hurting. I went to the doctors about it, she had one look and gave me some antibiotics and sent me on my way.
The next few days it got so bad to the point where i had to take time off work, i was lying down on my bed and could only find one position where i wasn’t in agony. I had my mum take me to the surgery and a doctor/nurse used a local anaesthesia and drained it, they gave me laughing gas for it and the whole procedure of her draining it took about 30 mins… one of the most traumatic and painful experiences of my life.
After that they packed the wound, told me to come back the next day and sent me on my way. The next couple of days i went back, they said it was looking fine and took the packing out and I thought that was the end of it… About 2 weeks later after it had healed, i was back at the gym and normal life I felt it getting sore again and felt so defeated. This time it was a lot bigger under the skin though, i went straight back to the doctors when it got really sore again and he just put me on antibiotics for a month!!! I knew it wasn’t going to fix it. I had to go back after a couple of days in the evening because the pain got unbearable and then they sent me to the surgical department of the hospital to go under general anaesthesia to get an incision and drainage.
At this point I had turned septic as well, was running a fever of about 39 degrees, felt awful and I was in so much pain. They had put me on morphine, had a drip in me and was on so many painkillers and nothing was helping. I got surgery about 11pm that night to get it drained, thankfully it was under general so I dont remember a thing!
Spent the night in the hospital and got discharged the next day. It’s been about 2 weeks since my surgery now where they drained it. Currently in no pain!! A nurse is coming round daily to change the packing and it’s actually getting the proper aftercare this time…. I’m hoping that’s why it came back, because it just didn’t heal properly from the first flare up. This really is such a pain having this though, I’ve had to have heaps of time off and I’m thinking if it comes back again it will really mess with me mentally. Hoping that this is just a one off thing though and it heals perfectly and I don’t have a reoccurrence!! I’m definitely going to make sure I keep the area super clean and avoid sitting for too long.
It’s definitely reassuring to see other people going through this same ordeal though and hopefully one day someone will come up with a cure for this Pilondial disease and we can bite it in the ass!! (literally)
