Becca’s story

July 6, 2012

I have a sort of strange story. I’m now 19 years old and had surgery this March. I had experienced cysts before in the natal cleft, but they were never bad until this winter. I had one that turned AWFUL, but it remained small and we caught it early. I ended up only having a super minor surgery and being down for only about a week. They told me it was very rare to recur after that type of surgery, and it hasn’t yet (thank God).

However, apparently in rare cases pilonidal disease manifests in other parts of the body. I had a tiny one in my pubic area that I was too humiliated and scared to tell anyone about, as it was before I knew what it was. And as of today I found one in my armpit. It just sucks so much because even one cyst in another location is supposed to be extremely rare, but I’ve had two in the past year in different locations. I don’t even have coarse body hair or many other risk factors. I guess I just got really unlucky. But it doesn’t seem like anyone here has had other cysts anywhere else, so I’m feeling pretty scared and alone. I’m hopefully going to the doctor next week to get it checked out. Hopefully it will be as easy in surgery as the one on my tailbone was. Maybe it will just go away like my others have.

I wish anyone else with strangely located cysts luck, and hopefully I will find someone else who’s gone through the same thing. Best of luck to all of you!
