I have dealt with pilonidal cyst for well over 5 years and thanks to the living medical care of the military it kept getting pushed off because “it wasn’t bad enough” for them to do anything about it.
April 2014 I was medically discharged due to a knee injury. In September 2014 while I was 7 and a half months pregnant my pilonidal cyst came back with a vengeance and I had to go to Urgent Care to have it lanced open. The doc there was awesome and went as far as lancing it open, cleaning out as much as she could and setting up appointments for me to come back for the next 4 days to have the wound flushed and packed to ensure it healed properly. It was great after that visit I didn’t have any issues until April 2015 and it reared its ugly head again. I went to the VA doctor this time and was told that this is an issue that will need to be taken care of if it comes back. By July 2015 it had come back three times so I called the VA and set up an appointment for August.
When my appointment came it had come back yet again and the doc after barely getting me a chance to see it said yes you will need surgery. Surgery was scheduled for September 28th 2015, initially I was going to be made groggy for the procedure but the surgeon decided after looking at it that they would be putting me completely under. Surgery went well and my follow up appointment was set for 15 days post-op. About 5 days post-op my incision started seeping so I called and they had me come in the following week. I was told that everything looks good and no infection and that seeping is a normal part of healing.
15 days post-op I go in thinking they are going to take out all 7 stitches only to have the doc tell me they are only taking out half of the stitches because of the area the incision is in, it has a history of pulling apart. Ok I am good with that but it is still seeping, again I was told no infection and seeping is a part of the healing process. Three weeks post-op they take the remaining stitches out Bc the stitches are now cutting into my skin. Ugh! I was also told that there is a small portion of the bottom of the incision that has pulled apart but overall everything looks good and still no infection and was told to make an appointment for two weeks later.
So here I sit a full month after surgery with the top of my incision still seeping, not as much as it was initially, but enough to cause me to be concerned and the bottom of my incision pulled apart a small bit worrying and wondering how long it will take for the seeping to stop and the incision to heal. Mind you I have a 10 month old that I am caring for as well… I feel like I am so limited in what I do because I don’t want to cause my incision to fully split open and don’t wan’t my incision to get infected.
