I want to share my story as what not to do when you have a pilonidal cyst with well developed sinus tracts. I had several injuries to the tailbone area as a young teen.
I already had pain and drainage by age 12 but was too embarrassed to tell my mother. Over the course of several years of doing office work and finding it terribly difficult to sit very long, I finally showed a doctor at about age 18. He didn’t suggest any treatment. I became pregnant at 21 and found I couldn’t have any pain medication during delivery because of the oozing abscess and draining sinus tracts.
So I had natural child birth much to my surprise. After my son was about nine months old, I went to a GP who sent me to a general surgeon. I had an operation where I was put under for about two hours. The incision was left open and loosely packed with gauze for several weeks. I was supposed to stay at the hospital for a week because I had very large and involved cyst that left a long incision but left after three days because I didn’t like people including nurses looking at my hind end. I do believe I didn’t really sit all the way down for nearly a year.
I am not kidding. Don’t wait to get this taken care of. So I did get my wish of having another pregnancy without the pain and drainage of that nasty cyst. Ironically, by the time I made it to the hospital to have my baby, it was too late for pain medication and I had another natural childbirth. But Thank God I was brave enough to have the surgery. I have not had any more problems down there. Although I have had several other abscesses on my back probably because I have very heavy body hair, I came to realize that I don’t need to be so shy with the doctor or my mother.
