I’m 16 years old. I first noticed a bump on my tailbone in last October. I had to sit funky to avoid, but I dont remember it swelling or being very painful. I continued dancing, cause thats what I do. It swelled a few more times throughout the dance season, but never any drainage. I was told by a dance physical therapist that I had stress fractured my tailbone. We would take care of it after the season.
The last weekend of the season I started feeling the bump getting larger, and a really horrible smell coming from it. I just ignored, eventually it went away. Two weeks after that the bump came back, we went to the orthopedics center and were told I had coccyxodenia (spelling?), chronic coccyx pain. That was a wednesday.
By Friday night I was leaking fluid again, I went online and found this site, and got that gut feeling. By Saturday morning it was so painful I couldnt walk. That morning we went to urgent care. There they lanced the wound and packed it. Worst experiance of my life. They told us to see a surgeon about it. We saw a pediatric surgeon that following Tuesday. I was so embaressed to show an older man my butt, but was willing to do alomst anything so I didnt have to go through that pain again.
We were at the Childrens hospital so we knew I was in good hands. He suggested excision surgery with a wound vac for quick recovery. I had my operation April 8th with an overnight stay. The first dressing change I went into the OR, and the other two since then have been done at the clinic under laughing gas. Its tough being stuck on the couch most of the time, but I know that this was the best option.
I hope that looking back a year from now this will all be just a goofy experiance, it’s just one of those things.
