K’s story

August 29, 2012

I found out I had a pilonidal cyst when I was 20 weeks pregnant. I had no idea what it was but was in so much pain my husband took me to the hospital. The ER doctors told me it was a pilonidal cyst and drained it. They told me there was a 50/50 chance of it coming back and the only way to permanently get rid of it was to have surgery. Since I was pregnant they said I would have to wait until after I delivered to get the surgery if Iwanted it. I was hoping to not have to since it sounded pretty scary and terrible to recover from. So I hoped it wouldn’t come back and I wouldn’t have to worry about it again. Unfortnately it came back a few weeks after I had my baby so I decided that since it came back pretty quickly I would have the surgery. I had it done in June and finally healed a few weeks ago. I had to wear a wound vac for about a month since it was so deep. The nurses changing the packing told me they could have fist a man’s fist in the wound in the beginning! To help it heal faster I had to wear a wound vac for about a month. It was annoying and gross but it helped heal the wound much faster. When it finally closed the doctors said they were impressed by how fast it heald. So I would recommend using the wound vac if you’re a candidate. It really did help a lot. I’m finally all healed but still have some pain at the site if I sit for too long. The doctor said it was normal and could happen for a while. I was worried it was coming back but the doctor told me not to worry and that it was a normal part of healing. Good luck to anyone that has to get this surgery. It was painful but definately worth not having to worry about this awful thing coming back again.
