Hi everyone 🙂 I am from South Africa and I came to this forum a lot during my pilonidal drama and it helped me so much , and I promised myself I’d come back and write my success story!
I was in Germany on business when I first realized something was majorly wrong with my coccyx (or so I thought then ) I had had the pains before during University but I thought it was the way I sat and got a coccyx pillow to help the problem and it would go away and come back but this time it was unbearable and I was so far away from home. Luckily I managed the 24 hour travels home and when I got back had to get admitted immediately to hospital and was told I need to have the Marsupialization procedure which would take 4-8 weeks to heal due to the fact that they did not suture the wound closed.
As you can imagine this was an immense shock for me and I was very down about it for a long time but I had the surgery the next day, it was very successful, I was in hospital for 5 days and then had VAC therapy for a month. It was very pricey but so worth it as it accelerated healing. I did not work for 6 weeks but luckily I have a very understanding company and also did not drive for 3 months but I listened to everything my doctor told me to do and didn’t try to be silly.
The wound eventually closed after 2 and a half months, I had a slight scare after about 3 months were I had a hematoma under the scar that caused two little holes to form but I went to the doctor and he checked it wasn’t another sinus forming and said I should just dress the wound as usual with tape and gauze. I am really happy to say that it has been 6 months since my surgery and I am 100% fine with no drama or complications!
I did get my mom to shave the hair around the scar with a electric hair trimmer as to avoid the hairs growing in again as advised by the doctor, but I just wanted to tell people here that are looking for comfort that there that there is light at the end of the tunnel! 🙂
And yes you will be paranoid with any pains in the area but it is probably just scar tissue that is healing but always rather be safe than sorry and go check at your doctor 🙂
